G-BOMBS[1] is an acronym that can be used to help you remember 6 cancer-fighting foods:

G – Greens

Greens are high in micro-nutrients, vitamins, and minerals. In fact, they are the most nutrient-dense of all foods. Unfortunately, leafy greens are not a large part of the American diet. Spinach, lettuce, kale, ollards, and even cruciferous vegetable likes broccoli and cauliflower should be consumed every day.

B – Beans

Beans are a healthy carbohydrate which contain high-levels of fiber and protein. Diets high in fiber (especially from beans) can help prevent colon cancer. Eating beans, peas or lentils at least twice a week has been found to decrease colon cancer risk by 50%.[2] Beans can be prepared rather easily and are a cost-effective protein option.

O – Onions

Onions belong to the Allium family along with garlic, chives, shallots, leeks, and scallions. Epidemiological studies have found that increased consumption of Allium vegetables is associated with lower risk of gastric and prostate cancers. Onions also contain antioxidants which can slow tumor growth.

M – Mushrooms

Mushrooms are shown to have anti-cancer properties, specifically with breast cancer. Mushrooms contain aromatase inhibitors which can halt estrogen production. Mushrooms can be prepared in a variety of ways and are an excellent addition to your daily diet.

B – Berries

Blueberries, goji berries, raspberries, and strawberries are powerful foods for fighting cancer. Generally speaking, berries are high in nutrients and fiber, but relatively low in sugar. They are also high in antioxidants which can have anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory benefits.

S – Seeds

Seeds and nuts are healthy fats that can aid in cardiovascular function. Seeds in particular are an excellent addition to your diet. Flax seeds, Chia seeds, and Hemp seeds contain more protein than nuts as well as beneficial micronutrients. Also, pumpkin seeds are an excellent source of magnesium and zinc.

When selecting food options, fill your plate with colorful vegetables and lean proteins. Incorporate healthy-fats and fiber-filled options as well. If you implement these healthy habits, you will be well on your way to a cancer-fighting lifestyle!
