Staying hydrated all year round is important, but it is especially essential in the summer. This is uniquely important for cancer patients, as chemotherapy can lead to dehydration. Here are some tips to help you stay hydrated and healthy.

Hydration is so important to our bodies. It helps regulate body temperature, prevent infections and keep our organs functioning properly. If we lack severe hydration our body will begin to shut down, create ingurinary tract infections, kidney stones and possibly lead to seizures.

Ways to Stay Hydrated:

  • Drink Water
    • This may seem obvious, but most people don’t drink enough water every day. Instead of soda or juice with a meal, opt for water instead!
  • Limit Caffeine and Alcohol
    • Even though caffeine and alcohol are liquids, they have dehydrating effects. Water is your best bet for staying hydrated.
  • Eat Foods Rich in Water
    • If you struggle with healthy water intake, try eating more foods rich in water, such as watermelon, celery, apples, lettuce, and cucumber.
  • Drink Electrolytes
    • For those who prefer their water with sugary add-ins due to the lack of flavor in plain water, try adding flavored electrolytes instead. This is not only a healthier way to hydrate your body, but it tastes good, too!
  • Monitor Your Hydration Levels
    • Ensuring your urine is a more pale yellow color indicates that you are staying hydrated enough.
  • Create a Hydration Routine
    • Everyone's hydration routine can be different. Try drinking a glass of water when you wake up and with every meal, or consider buying a special water bottle that motivates you to drink more.

Special Tips for Cancer Patients

Staying hydrated is essential during cancer treatment, but it can also be even more difficult. You may be experiencing loss of appetite, which is a common side effect of chemotherapy. Drinking small amounts of water frequently helps combat nausea and keep you hydrated at the same time.

Remember, hydration is a key component of overall health. Make it a priority, and your body will thank you! If you have any concerns about your hydration levels, especially when undergoing medical treatments, consult with your healthcare provider for personalized advice.
