What is your name? Becky
What is your role at OSC? Infusion Nurse, registered nurse, RN, and BSN
What is your Educational Background? Nursing is my second career. I graduated from Indiana University in chemistry and Spanish. I had thought I wanted to go to medical school but made the decision to go into medical sales where I worked in radiology and pharmaceuticals. After a sales role educating medical providers with a dialysis patient drug, I went to nursing school. I discovered that I was more interested in hands-on patient care. I had since moved to Charlotte from Baltimore where I met my husband and we were married. I received my nursing degree from Presbyterian Hospital’s (now Novant Health) associates’ program in RN and then my BSN at UNC-Charlotte
Why did you choose to work in Oncology/Hematology? My mom died of lung cancer when I was 26. I was inspired by her cancer journey and wanted to make a difference with patients.
What are your hobbies and interests? Spending time with friends, walking, and hiking. My husband and our 2 boys enjoy the mountains. We go often to Banner Elk and Beech Mountain in NC. Travel is high on my list of activities. We once visited Germany for a month. We swapped houses with another family. My favorite European country is Austria. We are looking forward to a snorkeling trip this December to Turks & Caicos
What can you share about OSC that would be helpful to a new patient? You are not a number in the system to us. We get to know you and your families. Dr. Favaro and Dr. Shehadeh are such dedicated physicians. They inspire all of us to make your experience at OSC a good one and ensure you never feel alone in your journey.
What is your favorite charity? KinderMourn
What is your favorite Jelly Belly flavor? Green apple
If you were to go to medical school and become a doctor, what type of medical doctor would you be? An OB/GYN or a focus on grief counseling
When you were a child, what Halloween costume was your favorite? I made an Ace of Hearts playing card out of a cardboard box.
